The United States Capitol is the nation's most familiar landmark.   Begun in 1793, it is the seat of the legislative branch of the national government which houses the meeting chambers of the Senate and the House of Representatives.  It is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world and stands as a monument  to the American people and their government.  It is located on Capitol Hill on the eastern terminus of the National Mall,  For more detailed information about the Capitol and its history visit one of the sites listed below.  Open: Daily 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except Christmas, Thanksgiving and January 1.
