The National Museum of The
American Indian, which opened
in September 2004, is the first national museum in the country dedicated
exclusively to Native Americans. The five-story, 250,000-square-foot,
curvilinear building is set in a 4.25-acre site and is surrounded by
simulated wetlands. The museum is devoted to the collection, preservation, and
presentation of the culture of the indigenous populations of the Western
Hemisphere. It's collection, includes 4 million cataloged items, made up
of ceramics, masks, dolls, carvings, textiles, featherwork, beadwork, and
jewelry. Open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily; closed December 25.
